Oli & Lima
Being in Bali is a bitter sweet experience for me.
It has a feeling you simply cannot describe, a humbleness, a purity. The rich culture are so welcoming, the natural beauty is endless and there is such an array of experiences available.
The food is beyond delicious and the island life is relaxed and laid back. It also has its challenges…overdevelopment, traffic and infrastructure, waste management and thousands of stray dogs roaming the street.
Many of the street dogs are among Balinese families or are taken care by a restaurant or hotel and in looked after while many are also on poor health and struggle to survive on the streets facing hunger, mistreatment, illness, malnutrition and uncontrolled breeding.
I have been visiting Bali for over 8 years now and volunteer in welfare programs or street feeds often and although there is a lot more organisations and assistance than ever before, the problems seem endless when you in it. There is happy stories and not so happy stories. Here’s my love story...
Meet kids Oli and Lima.
While being in another congested traffic jam, I saw this pink little thing huddled up on a main road called Pantai Lima, (hence the name). She was pink from having no hair from so malnourished. Naturally I fostered her to wellness with the plan to find her a home as I’ve done with many other pups but this one stuck! My second foster fail was Oli, found as a tiny pup abandoned in the rice fields. Very skinny and also with a bad skin condition. I travelled between Cape Town and Bali for a year and eventually brought them to my first home in Cape Town. Needless to say they are loving the white beaches and scenic mountains <3
